What’s Changing?
Microsoft is making it harder to set up Windows without a Microsoft account. Previously, users could create a local account and skip signing in with an online (Live) account. That option is disappearing, meaning new Windows installations will require an internet connection and a Microsoft account.
In IT speak, Microsoft has blocked the “bypassnro” command as of late March 2025 – a commonly used method to bypass the Microsoft account requirement during Windows 11 setup.
This means:
- You must sign in with a Microsoft account when installing Windows 11.
- A local account option is only available after setup (if you switch manually).
- Future updates may further tighten restrictions.
Why Is Microsoft Doing This?
Microsoft wants users to be connected to their ecosystem, which offers:
- Cloud integration – Automatic OneDrive backups
- Security improvements – Better account recovery and two-factor authentication
- Personalised experience – Syncing settings across devices
But not everyone welcomes this change, especially those who prefer local accounts for privacy, security, or simplicity.
How Will This Affect You?
- Businesses & IT Professionals – Setting up devices for employees will take longer, and users will need Microsoft accounts.
- Home Users – If you prefer local accounts, you’ll need to adapt or find workarounds.
- Privacy-Conscious Users – Your data will be more connected to Microsoft services by default.
Top Tips to Stay in Control
- Create a Microsoft Account Just for Setup – If you value privacy, set up a throwaway Microsoft account for installation. You can switch to a local account afterward and remove the online one.
- Switch to a Local Account Post-Setup – Once Windows is installed, head to Settings > Accounts > Your Info and choose “Sign in with a local account instead” to regain control.
- Use Windows Autopilot or Deployment Tools (for IT) – If you’re rolling out multiple devices, consider using Windows Autopilot or deployment scripts to streamline setup and apply your preferred configurations.
- Audit and Tweak Privacy Settings Immediately – After setup, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and disable unwanted data collection features, ad tracking, and telemetry.
- Block Internet Access During Setup (Advanced) – Disconnect from the internet during installation on Pro editions to occasionally trigger the offline setup flow — this may still work in some builds.
- Use Domain or Azure AD Join for Business Devices – Skip personal Microsoft accounts altogether by joining devices to your business domain or Azure AD — ideal for centrally managed environments.
- Consider Third-Party Tools – Some advanced users may explore alternative setups, but be cautious as you never really know what is inside!
