Mobile security matters
We all use our phones for work – whether it’s checking email on the train, reviewing files on the go, or messaging a colleague from home. But what happens when that phone is lost, stolen, or compromised?
If it holds access to company systems, shared files, or sensitive conversations, your entire business could be at risk.
It’s easy to assume your phone is secure. But without the right protections in place, mobile devices can leave your organisation exposed.
The risk is real
A misplaced device or a single tap on a malicious link could lead to:
- Unauthorised access to company files and apps
- Data leaks from synced cloud storage or email
- Reputation damage if customer data is compromised
- Regulatory issues under GDPR and other compliance frameworks
It’s not just about the phone – it’s about what’s on the phone.
What can you do?
- Enforce Device Encryption – Make sure all work phones (and personal phones used for work) have encryption enabled. This protects stored data if a device falls into the wrong hands.
- Use Mobile Device Management (MDM) – MDM software allows businesses to remotely lock, wipe or locate devices. It’s essential for teams who use mobiles or tablets for work.
- Mandate Strong Passwords & Biometric – Simple PINs aren’t enough. Encourage the use of biometrics (fingerprint or face ID) and strong, unique passwords.
- Set Up Two-Factor Authentication – 2FA on email, cloud storage and apps adds a vital second layer of protection – especially on mobile, where accounts often stay logged in.
- Control App Permission – Review what apps can access. That fun photo editor might have access to files, location and contacts – a big risk if work data is stored locally.
- Train Your Team – Many mobile security breaches come down to user error. Regular training on phishing, app safety and reporting lost devices is key.
A Shared Responsibility
Whether you issue work phones or rely on a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) approach, mobile device security should be part of your wider IT policy. It’s not just an IT issue – it’s a business continuity issue.
