Understanding cyber security

Endpoints, virtual local area network hopping, bare-metal restore and a cloud virtual private network – yikes, tons of technical terms and IT jargon. Here’s a jargon-free spotlight on cyber security from the team at CSR Digital.

Cyber security is the application of technologies, processes, and controls to protect systems, networks, programs, devices and data from cyber-attacks.

This is a vital requirement of IT support and at CSR Digital we provide a multi layered approach to ensure comprehensive protection. We will help you put protective layers in place to give you excellent security, mitigate threats to your business and improve the resilience of your business systems.

So, what’s it all about? Here is a little more information and a jargon-free summary of all the key elements.

Backups

Backups are key to cyber security so we provide and deploy multiple tools to harden ‘endpoints’  – key to reducing the risk of attacks.

But what exactly is an endpoint? Put simply, they are remote computing devices that communicate back and forth with the networks to which they are connected. Examples include desktops, laptops and smartphones.

When data loss does occur backups are a last line of defence and we can support with:

  • Active machine health monitoring to warn of potential failures
  • SharePoint and OneDrive Backups to protect data on Microsoft servers
  • Remote desktop recovery with bare-metal restore (BMR)

Another technical term. So, what is a BMR? In essence, it is a system state backup which ensures recovery when a machine won’t start and users need to restore the entire system to remediate the issue.

Network Infrastructure and Security

As your business expands your network and infrastructure will need to be managed to keep up with your increasing demand. Even the most up to date networks need to be continually managed to prevent unauthorised access.

CSR Digital can assist with network infrastructure  projects and the expansion of your network.

We can support with:

  • Cloud based VPN (virtual private network) – a form of technology designed to help users access their organisation’s applications, data, and files through a website or an application to ensure network traffic at the office is encrypted. A cloud VPN provides a secure connection that can be rapidly deployed globally.
  • Firewall with VPN (virtual private network), VLANs (virtual local area networks), intrusion detection, geo blocking (technology that restricts access to Internet content based upon the user’s geographical location) and domain name blacklisting
  • VLAN device isolation, restricting network device traffic reducing risk of unauthorised network access and cross device communication

Email Security

We use Perception Point’s Advanced Email Security Solution, a next-gen email security software that prevents APTs (advanced persistent threats), phishing, malware, ATO (authorisation to operate), impersonation, and BEC attacks with the speed, scale, and agility of the cloud.

BEC stands for business email compromise and is a form of phishing attack where a criminal attempts to trick a senior executive (or budget holder) into transferring funds or revealing sensitive information.

This security solution outperforms any other enterprise email security solution on the market and is uniquely capable of preventing the most ‘difficult to detect’ threats including:

  • Targeted phishing attacks
  • Deeply embedded attacks
  • Advanced persistent threats (APTs)
  • BEC Attacks
  • Impersonation attacks
  • Payload-less attacks (these email types are unique in that they contain no malicious links, content, or malware. Targets typically receive simple but customised messages in hopes to circumvent security.)
